An Ashramite from Chennai telephoned to me and requested me that I should save Nithyanada from the sex scandal by examining the video-clippings scientifically. The Ashramite claimed that the videos shown on TV channels are morphed and not true. The Ashramite said he was aware that my findings saved i) Anara Gupta from the J&K pornographic scandal case and ii) Subramaniam Swamy from the Photo Fake Case booked under TADA Act. He said he was also aware of my exposing the morphed video-clippings about Kalaigner Karunanithihi’s arrest shown in a private TV channel at that time.

I thought that the Ashramite was really anguished about the affair and advised him that he should send the questioned video clippings and some genuine video recordings of Nithyananda along with a letter of authority requesting me to examining the said tapes and offer an opinion. I also had a call from a close friend of mine from New York regarding this matter. He also expressed his doubt about the video aired on the TV channels. The Ashramite however did not approach me thereafter. Nevertheless people from the Star Vijay TV channel called on me and asked for a forensic opinion by making available to me the questioned video as well as the genuine Nithyananda’s clippings and a few still photographs. My opinion and interview appeared in “Kutram” programme telecast at 10 pm on Thursday, the 11th March 2010

Forensic video analysis is the scientific examination of questioned videos and comparison of the same with the admittedly genuine videos and to establish personal identification of individuals captured in the video or evaluation of the incidents that are captured. It may also be necessary to find out whether the questioned video is edited, morphed, masked, animated. We should also look for video mash-up, introduction of special video effects, audio video sync, lip sync error or lip-flap).

I found the questioned video happened to be a high resolution recording made from a fixed stable position devoid of shaky imagery and poor exposure. It was therefore not necessary for me to subject the recorded video to enhancement. [Poor video images are enhanced to a point where details of the face can be seen].

I did not detect any morphing technique having been used in the recorded video. Morphing is the technique that creates a smooth, controlled transformation of one image into another. [The morphing effect is widely used for various tasks ranging from generation of fancy special effects, smoothing transitions between video frames to funny warping of faces and mixing say parent's photos for prediction of how their child will look like or recreation of past hero image from the photos of his descendants]. I also did not detect any editing to manipulate the events that are recorded.

I had produced a few still images of Nithyananda’s face from the questioned video and compared them with the genuine still face images of Nithyananda. Comparison of anthropometric landmarks and tallying of biometric ratios of measurements between selected landmarks of the face, gait, facial expression, and overall facial appearance both in the questioned frames and genuine frames confirm that the male individual seen in the questioned video is none other than Nithyananda found in in the genuine stills and videos I had examined. Forensic science has no place to opine whether monks, or anybody for that matter, can indulge in sexual acts. After all, nature has created all biological species mainly for procreation.
